Meet George

Relationship Counseling Specialist in Winston-Salem

 Certified in Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Hello! I'm Dr. George Stoupas, licensed clinical mental health counselor, licensed marriage and family therapist, and certified addiction professional. Since 2011, I've helped hundreds of individuals and couples make lasting changes in their lives. Whether it be communication problems, conflict, affairs, drug and alcohol use, lack of intimacy, or some other relationship issue, I have been a dedicated therapist and advocate for folks from all walks of life. I genuinely love what I do.

A little about me: I am originally from South Florida. My mom was a teacher and my dad owned a restaurant. With a mix of Chilean and Greek immigrants in my family, there were quite a few languages and personalities in our home growing up. I'm the oldest of two boys, and my brother is a school psychologist here in North Carolina. Prior to becoming a counselor, I studied art, philosophy, and political theory - all of which contribute to my appreciation for the human condition. I've been married to my partner for 16+ years and we have two elementary-aged children, a son and a daughter. We love exploring Winston-Salem and the Triad area whenever we have the opportunity, which typically involves hiking in the woods looking for interesting plants and wildlife. We also have quite a bit of wildlife at home between our dogs, cats, chickens, and beehives. I enjoy painting, live music, sci-fi, and yard-work. As a counselor, I've worked in many different types of agencies with different groups of people; however, couples counseling in my private practice is near to my heart. I have also been a counselor educator for over a decade, originally in Florida and now at Wake Forest University's Department of Counseling, where I teach courses and train new counselors joining our wonderful profession. I see my clinical work as a compliment to my work in academia; they both enhance and inform one another.

My life hasn't always been easy (it's life, after all), but the challenges I've faced help me appreciate what people go through in their own relationships. Together with my wife, we live in the ongoing laboratory of our marriage, tweaking and adjusting as we go. As a dad, I also understand the joys - and heartbreaks - of parenting, as well as how this role creates challenges and opportunities in other areas of life. I have dedicated my clinical practice to helping others find their way through the darkness to discover fulfilling and secure relationships in their own lives. I understand that life can be both awesome and awful sometimes, and I truly believe that people are doing the best they can at any given moment, no matter how it might look to others on the outside.

You can read about my professional achievements below; however, I'm also quite proud of what's not listed - the trust my clients place in me and the many transformations I've supported along the way. Thank you for visiting, and please reach out if you have any questions. There's no fee or obligation for calling.
